Some things people bring to a med spa need a doctor rather than a treatment room. Some things people bring to a med spa are not aesthetic problems and need a doctor rather than a treatment room. See a physician or a dermatologist, not us, if you have a mole or a mark that has changed shape, colour or size, or that bleeds, itches or will not heal; a sore anywhere that has been there more than three weeks; a rash you cannot explain; a patch of skin that is newly numb, hard or ulcerated; sudden hair loss in patches, or hair loss alongside fatigue or weight change; or swelling, heat and spreading redness that could be an infection. And if you have had filler treatment anywhere and the area becomes white or mottled, severely painful, or your vision changes, that is an emergency — telephone us immediately if we treated you, and go to an emergency room if you cannot reach somebody within minutes. We would far rather you rang a doctor and never rang us at all.

Why people come in

Six things people actually say at the consultation

Almost nobody arrives naming a treatment. They arrive with a sentence about how they look, and most of the hour is working out which of these is really in front of us — and occasionally telling somebody it is none of them.

I look tired even when I am not

The most common sentence said in the consultation room, and it is almost never about one line. It is usually volume, shadow and skin quality together, and the useful answer frequently costs less than the treatment people come in asking for.

Years of sun have caught up with me

Brown patches, broken vessels, rough texture and the general weathering that shows on the face, the chest and the backs of the hands. This responds well and slowly, across months, to light and resurfacing rather than to anything injected.

My skin breaks out and then scars

Active acne and the marks it leaves are two different problems needing two different treatments, and doing the second before the first is under control wastes your money. Sometimes the right answer is a dermatologist and a prescription first, and we will say so.

I am tired of shaving and waxing

Laser hair reduction is the most reliably satisfying treatment in this building, provided the expectation is right: it is reduction rather than removal, it takes a course spread across months, and it works far better on some hair and skin combinations than on others.

My body has changed and exercise has not fixed it

Body treatments are the most oversold category in aesthetics. They can reduce a defined pocket of fat and tighten skin a little. They are not weight loss, they will not fix loose skin after major weight change, and we will tell you when a surgeon is the honest answer.

My hair is thinning and I want to act early

Hair restoration works best on hair that is thinning rather than hair that has gone, and only after somebody has established why it is thinning. That order matters more than the treatment does.

What we do

The treatments people book most

Twenty-four treatment pages, each one saying what is actually done, what it costs, how many sessions it genuinely takes, what can go wrong, and who we will not treat.

Wrinkle-Relaxing Injections — Woodside Med Spa, Woodside NY

Injectables & Facial Balancing

Wrinkle-Relaxing Injections

A small amount of a purified protein placed in a specific muscle so it stops pulling as hard. It softens the lines that appear when you move. It does very little to the lines that are there when your face is still.

Injectables & Facial Balancing

Dermal Fillers

A gel placed under the skin to restore volume or change a contour. It works immediately and lasts months to years. It is also the treatment in this building with the smallest margin for error.

Skin & Facial Treatments

Microneedling

Medical-Grade Facials — Woodside Med Spa, Woodside NY

Skin & Facial Treatments

Medical-Grade Facials

A facial performed by a licensed aesthetician using professional-strength actives, chosen for your skin rather than from a menu. It is treatment rather than pampering, and it is where most people should begin.

IPL Photofacial — Woodside Med Spa, Woodside NY

Laser & Light

IPL Photofacial

A broad flash of filtered light absorbed by brown patches and red vessels, which breaks them up so the body can clear them. Excellent for sun damage on lighter skin — and genuinely risky on richer skin.

How this practice works

Four things we do differently, and can be held to

Aesthetics has a reputation problem, and most of it is earned by the parts of the trade that sell a package to somebody lying in a treatment chair with their face already cleaned. Here is what we do instead.

The consultation room at Woodside Med Spa, Woodside NY

A full hour to decide, in a room with no couch in it

The consultation happens at a table, not in a treatment chair, because it is very hard to say no while lying down. An hour: your history, your skin in daylight, what you actually want, what would achieve it, what it costs and what it cannot do. Nobody is treated at that appointment unless they asked for that in advance.

No packages, no membership, no points

You pay per treatment, at the price on this website. We do not sell blocks of six, we do not run a loyalty scheme on injectables, and nobody here is paid commission. A discount for committing in advance is a reason to come back that has nothing to do with your face.

The risks in writing, before the day

You get the side effects, the recovery, the failure rate and the rare serious complications on paper, with time to read them at home. If a treatment is a bad idea for your skin type, your medication or your plans next month, we say so and we do not book it.

One clinician, start to finish

You see the same person each visit, in their own suite, on their own schedule. Four clinicians work here and each keeps their own book, so you can choose the one whose work suits you and stay with them.

No before-and-after photographs, and no promised outcome. There are no before-and-after photographs on this website and there never will be. Every set you have seen somewhere else was chosen from a much larger pile, and the second picture is usually taken in different light, at a different angle, at a different time of day, often with makeup and frequently after retouching. Even an entirely honest pair shows you what happened to somebody else's face. What we publish instead is what a treatment typically changes, by roughly how much, how long it lasts, how many sessions it usually takes and how often people are disappointed. We do not guarantee an outcome, we cannot, and anybody who does is either guessing or selling.

What a med spa does not treat. We treat the appearance of healthy skin, hair and body. We do not diagnose or treat disease. If you bring us a mole, a changing mark, an unexplained rash, a sore that will not heal, skin that has become hard or numb, psoriasis, eczema, an autoimmune skin condition, or hair loss that came on suddenly or in patches, what you will get is the name of a doctor rather than a treatment plan. Aesthetic treatment applied on top of an undiagnosed skin problem can mask it, delay the diagnosis and occasionally make it worse. We would rather lose the booking.

Our clinicians

Four clinicians, four suites, four separate books

Each keeps their own schedule and sees their own clients, so you can choose the one whose work suits you and stay with them. You see the same person every visit.

Dr. Naomi Vasquez-Ferreira, Injectables & Facial Balancing at Woodside Med Spa

Dr. Naomi Vasquez-Ferreira, MD

Injectables & Facial Balancing

Medical Director · Suite 1 · here since 2016

Naomi opened this practice in 2016 after eleven years in hospital medicine, and she is the reason the consultation room has a table in it instead of a couch. She takes the difficult conversations: the client who was treated somewhere else and is unhappy, the one who wants considerably more than their face needs, and the one who arrives with a photograph of a stranger. She is the person here most likely to tell you that the answer is nothing at all, or that the answer is a dermatologist, and she says it at the first appointment rather than after the third.

Elena Petrosyan, Nurse Practitioner

Injectables & Skin Health

Nurse Practitioner · Suite 2 · here since 2018

Elena sees most of the people having something done for the first time, which is deliberate: she is unhurried, she explains everything twice without being asked, and she is entirely comfortable spending an hour with somebody who then decides not to go ahead. She also runs the practice's skin programmes, which makes her the clinician most likely to talk you out of an injectable and into six months of unglamorous resurfacing instead.

Laser & Energy Treatments

Physician Assistant · Suite 3 · here since 2019

Marcus runs the laser room, and he has spent his career on the part of this field that can genuinely injure somebody. He treats a great many clients with deeper skin tones and is candid that much of the laser industry was built and tested around pale skin, which is why he test patches more often than anybody else here and why he will postpone a treatment over a fortnight-old holiday tan without any negotiation at all.

Thandiwe Okonjo, Medical Facials & Resurfacing at Woodside Med Spa

Thandiwe Okonjo, Licensed Aesthetician

Medical Facials & Resurfacing

Licensed Aesthetician · Suite 4 · here since 2017

Thandiwe does the work that actually changes skin, which is repetitive, gradual and almost never photogenic. She sees people every four to six weeks for months at a time, and a large part of her job is persuading them that the thing working slowly is working. She writes the home routines, and she is ruthless about cutting them down — most people arrive using eleven products and leave using four.

Booking

The calendar shows only the hours that are genuinely free

Pick a clinician, pick an hour, and it is booked. The calendar reads the same schedule each of them keeps — their working days, their lunch break, the hours they have blocked out and the appointments already taken — so an hour on screen is an hour you can actually have.

You get an email straight away with a link to confirm it, and a reminder the day before if you booked further ahead than that. Not confirming does not cancel anything; it simply shows as unconfirmed on the clinician's calendar until you say either way. You can cancel your own appointment from that email at any time up until it starts.

Prices

What it costs, before you book rather than after

These are prices, not estimates, and they are the prices you pay. A consultation is $85, or $120 with the medical director, and it is charged whether it ends in a treatment plan or in us sending you to a dermatologist. If you go ahead with treatment at a later appointment, the consultation fee comes off that first treatment. Test patches are free and so is the two-week review after any injectable, because charging for the appointment that checks our own work would be a strange thing to do. There are no packages to buy, no membership, no points and no discount for committing to a course — a discount for committing in advance is a reason to keep coming that has nothing to do with your skin. Aesthetic treatment is elective and no insurance plan covers it; see /payment-and-financing.html for how paying actually works here.

In their words

What clients say

These comments are invented, like everything else on this demonstration site. They are not marked up as reviews and no rating is claimed anywhere — see the note at the foot of the page.

“I came in wanting filler in my cheeks and left with a peel programme and a bill for a consultation. Six months later she asked whether I still wanted the filler, and I did not.”

Client, Sunnyside · skin texture and tone

“He would not treat me because I had been in Puerto Rico three weeks earlier. I was annoyed at the time. He then explained what a laser does to a tan and I stopped being annoyed.”

Client, Jackson Heights · laser hair reduction

“The consultation is at a table, not in the chair. I did not realise how much difference that makes until I said no to something and nothing awkward happened.”

Client, Woodside · first injectable treatment

“What I remember is being handed the risks on paper and told to read them at home. Nobody had ever made me leave the building to think about it before.”

Client, Elmhurst · dermal filler

“I asked for the strongest peel they do. She said no twice and started me on the light one. By the fourth appointment I understood why.”

Client, Astoria · pigmentation and texture

“They told me at the first appointment that my hair loss needed blood tests before anything else. It did. That is not what I wanted to hear and it was the right answer.”

Client, Maspeth · hair thinning

The practice

Three minutes from 61st Street–Woodside

Three minutes' walk from the 61st Street–Woodside station — the 7 train, the Long Island Rail Road, and the Q32, Q60, Q66 and Q70 buses all stop within a block. There is metered parking on 61st Street and a short loading bay outside the door. The entrance is step-free, all four suites are on one level, and the recovery room is beside the door if you would rather sit for ten minutes before walking back out.

2,900 square feet on one floor with four private treatment suites, a separate laser room with its own door and its own eyewear station, a consultation room with no treatment couch in it, a small infusion lounge, and a quiet recovery room with a chair, a blanket and no clock in it.

Questions

The questions we are asked most

What is the difference between a med spa and a day spa?

A day spa performs treatments that do not break the skin or deliver medical-strength energy into it: massage, facials, waxing. A med spa performs some treatments that are medicine — injections, prescription-strength peels, medical lasers — which means there is a medical director, a medical history, a consultation and a consent process, and it means some people are turned away. If somewhere is offering injectables with no consultation and no medical oversight, that is the thing to worry about rather than the price.

Why are there no before-and-after photographs on this website?

Because they are not evidence. Every set you have seen was selected from a much larger pile, the second picture is usually taken in different light at a different angle, and often the person is wearing makeup in one and not in the other. Even an entirely honest pair shows you what happened to somebody else. We would rather tell you in writing what a treatment typically changes, how long it lasts, how many sessions it takes and how often people are disappointed. /results-and-expectations.html sets that out in full.

Will you tell me what brand you use?

Yes — in the room, once you are a client and it is relevant to your consent. What we will not do is put manufacturers' names in our advertising, and this website names none. Aesthetic marketing runs on brand names because they let a clinic borrow authority it has not earned, and because they encourage you to shop for a product rather than for the person holding the syringe. The person holding the syringe matters more.

Does it hurt?

It varies far more by treatment than by person. Wrinkle-relaxing injections are a few seconds of a sharp scratch. Fillers are uncomfortable and are done with numbing cream and usually an anaesthetic mixed into the product. Laser hair reduction feels like an elastic band snapping against the skin. Microneedling and medium peels are genuinely uncomfortable for a few minutes. We tell you honestly which category you are in, and you can stop at any point, including halfway through.

Can I have something done on the same day as my consultation?

Sometimes, but not by default, and never for a first injectable treatment unless you arrived expecting that and have already thought it over. The reason is simple: it is very hard to change your mind while lying down with somebody standing over you holding a syringe. Skin treatments and laser sessions are often done the same day once you have consented, and a laser course starts with a test patch rather than a full treatment in any case.

Is it safe for deeper skin tones?

Some of it, with the right settings and the right device, and some of it needs real caution. Light-based treatment carries a higher risk of burns and long-lasting pigment change on richer skin, and a great deal of the laser industry was built and tested around pale skin. That is exactly why we test patch, why we start at conservative settings, and why we will decline a treatment rather than take a chance with it. Ask for Marcus if this is your question — it is most of what he does.

Do you treat anybody under eighteen?

Not for cosmetic injectable treatment, ever, and not for anything cosmetic without a parent present and a conversation about why. Some medical skin treatment for acne is reasonable in a younger person and we will consider it with a parent, often after a dermatologist has been involved. Cosmetic work on a face that is still changing is not something we will do.

What happens if something goes wrong?

You telephone the number on your written plan, at any hour, and you speak to the clinician who treated you rather than to a call centre. Bruising and swelling are managed with reassurance and time. Lumps are assessed and usually resolved. The rare filler emergency — a blocked vessel, which shows itself as severe pain, white or mottled skin, or a change in vision — is treated as an emergency here, and we hold what is needed to reverse it on site. Nobody is charged for the management of a complication we caused.

A written plan and a written price before anything is booked

Book a consultation

Pick a clinician and an hour from the calendar — it shows only the times each of them genuinely has free. A consultation is a full hour at a table with no treatment couch in the room, and it costs $85, or $120 with the medical director. If you go ahead, that comes off your first treatment. If we tell you the answer is nothing, or a dermatologist, it costs exactly the same.
